Hidden Oasis Hike
🏝️ Hidden Oasis (Sal Shahha) Hike
Overview
The Hidden Oasis, locally known as Sal Shahha or Sal Shuha, lies beneath the rocky slopes of Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah — one of the UAE’s most scenic and culturally rich mountain hikes.
Unlike most wadis in the UAE that are dry and barren, this trail surprises visitors with ancient terraces, palm groves, and irrigation channels, remnants of old farms once sustained by mountain springs and seasonal rainfall.
Back in the days, the oasis flourished with over hundreds of palm trees. Sadly, after the construction of the Jebel Jais road, a massive fire destroyed nearly 90% of its vegetation — a tragic loss still remembered by locals. Despite that, Sal Shahha remains a beautiful reminder of Ras Al Khaimah’s mountain heritage, where nature, culture, and adventure come together.
🥾 Main Hiking Route (Recommended Out & Back Trail)
This is the classic Hidden Oasis route, perfect for beginners and moderate hikers. It starts from the lower village, climbs gradually up the mountain, crosses a dam and a valley filled with boulders, and ends at the tranquil oasis. The same route is used for the return.
1️⃣ Starting Point
-
Parking: Park near the small village (look for the trail signboard).
-
Gear: Hiking shoes with solid grip, 2–3L water, snacks, hat, and sun protection.
2️⃣ Steep Start (First 20 Minutes)
-
The trail begins with a steep ascent gaining around 20 meters — this is the most demanding part for beginners.
-
Once you reach the top, the path flattens into a balcony walk, revealing stunning views of the cliffs and wadis below.
3️⃣ Balcony Walk & Descent to the Dam
-
This section is scenic, with narrow ledges and light exposure to heights.
-
Safety ropes and cables are fixed in exposed areas for support.
-
The path then descends gradually toward the small dam — a perfect photo stop.
4️⃣ Crossing the Dam & Entering the Valley
-
After the dam, follow the valley floor surrounded by rugged cliffs and old rock formations.
-
The route remains clear and gentle before you reach the boulders.
5️⃣ The Boulder Section
-
The last 1–1.5 km passes through large boulders and carved steps, built to make passage easier.
-
This is the most beautiful part of the hike, where the landscape feels completely untouched.
6️⃣ Arrival at the Hidden Oasis
-
The oasis reveals itself with palm remnants, ancient terraces, and water channels that once nourished the farms.
-
Sit back, relax in the shade, and take in the peaceful scenery before retracing your steps.
7️⃣ Return via the Same Route
-
Follow the same path back to the starting point — the best and safest option for most hikers.
📏 Distance: ±7 km (round trip)
🕒 Duration: 3–4 hours
🏔 Elevation Gain: ±200m
💪 Difficulty: Moderate
