Overview

Trek to K2 Base Camp via Baltoro Glacier and Concordia on a 21-day Pakistan expedition, organized by Alpine Trekkers UAE and experienced local mountain professionals.

The K2 Base Camp Trek – 21 Days is an extraordinary high-altitude adventure through the Karakoram mountains of northern Pakistan. Following the classic route from Askole along the Baltoro Glacier to Concordia and K2 Base Camp, this expedition takes trekkers into one of the world's most spectacular mountain landscapes, beneath K2 (8,611 m), the world's second-highest peak.

The journey begins in Islamabad, continues to Skardu in Baltistan, and reaches the remote trekking trail at Askole. Along the way, trekkers encounter dramatic glacier scenery, the granite towers of the Karakoram and remarkable views of peaks including Trango Towers, Gasherbrum IV and Broad Peak. The route reaches approximately 5,150 metres at K2 Base Camp, subject to conditions and expedition decisions.

This is the classic K2 Base Camp trek, not the Gondogoro La crossing. After visiting the K2 Base Camp area, the expedition returns along the Baltoro Glacier approach. The planned 21-day schedule allows time for travel, acclimatization and possible delays, although weather, road conditions and individual health may require changes.

Organized by Alpine Trekkers UAE in collaboration with World Adventure Tours Pakistan, this K2 Base Camp Trek welcomes international travelers from around the world. Both companies were founded by Siddiq Fegum, whose professional experience in the Karakoram began in 2006. Combining UAE-based trip coordination with experienced local trekking support in Pakistan, our team helps adventurers from Europe, North America, Asia, Australia, the Middle East and beyond prepare for this demanding high-altitude expedition.

This trek is intended for physically fit, well-prepared adventurers with previous hiking experience. Participants should expect long trekking days, rocky and uneven glacier terrain, tented accommodation, changing mountain weather and the challenges of high altitude. No technical summit climbing is involved, but the expedition requires endurance, appropriate equipment and careful acclimatization.

Important Itinerary Notes

This 21-day K2 Base Camp Trek follows the standard route through the Baltoro Glacier to Concordia and K2 Base Camp, returning along the same general route. It does not include the Gondogoro La crossing.

The itinerary is a planned schedule and may be adjusted according to weather, glacier conditions, road access, flight availability, acclimatization, group fitness and the expedition leader's safety assessment.

Domestic flights between Islamabad and Skardu are weather-dependent. If flights cannot operate, alternative road transportation via the Karakoram Highway will be arranged where conditions permit. This may affect the itinerary.

The visit to K2 Base Camp, approximately 5,150 metres, depends on safe weather and trail conditions. Reaching Base Camp cannot be guaranteed.

Breakfast is included during hotel stays in Islamabad and Skardu. During trekking days, breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea, coffee, snacks and boiled or appropriately purified drinking water are provided as part of the expedition's group catering service.

Travelers should allow flexibility around their international travel arrangements because delays can occur in this remote mountainous region.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Islamabad, Pakistan – Airport Pickup and Hotel Transfer

Welcome to Pakistan! Upon arrival at Islamabad International Airport, you will be met by our local team and transferred to your hotel in Islamabad.

After check-in, you can rest and recover from your international journey. Depending on your arrival time, our team may provide an initial briefing about the K2 Base Camp Trek, including the planned journey to Skardu, trekking preparations, weather considerations and important safety information.

The day is primarily reserved for arrival, rest and preparation. Any remaining briefing or equipment checks can be completed before the trek begins.

Overnight: Hotel in Islamabad.

Meals included: Breakfast at the hotel, subject to your arrival time. Lunch and dinner are not included.

Day 2

Fly from Islamabad to Skardu | Gateway to the Karakoram

After breakfast, transfer to Islamabad International Airport for the scheduled domestic flight to Skardu, weather and airline operations permitting.

The flight offers spectacular views of northern Pakistan when skies are clear. On arrival in Skardu, transfer to the hotel and spend the remaining time resting and adjusting to the mountain environment.

If the flight is cancelled because of weather or operational restrictions, the team will arrange an alternative journey by road along the Karakoram Highway, subject to road and safety conditions. The road journey takes considerably longer and may require adjustments to subsequent days.

Overnight: Hotel in Skardu, or accommodation en route if traveling by road.
Meals: Breakfast included during hotel stays; lunch and dinner at personal expense.

Day 3

Day 3 – Skardu: Trek Preparation, Equipment Checks and Permit Arrangements

Spend the day preparing for the journey into the Central Karakoram. The team will review trekking equipment, discuss altitude safety and confirm expedition arrangements, including any outstanding permit formalities.

Depending on available time and conditions, there may be an opportunity for a short walk or sightseeing around Skardu.

This day also provides flexibility if the journey from Islamabad has been affected by flight cancellations or road delays.

Overnight: Hotel in Skardu.
Meals: Breakfast included; lunch and dinner at personal expense.

Day 4

Drive from Skardu to Askole | Beginning of the Baltoro Route

Travel by 4x4 jeep from Skardu through the Shigar and Braldu valleys toward Askole, the traditional starting point for treks into the Baltoro Glacier region.

The journey follows rugged mountain roads through dramatic river valleys and remote settlements. Driving time and the final road-access point depend on road conditions.

On arrival, the trekking team prepares the camping equipment and expedition supplies.

Overnight: Camping near Askole or the operational roadhead.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner during the camping expedition.

Day 5

Trek from Askole to Jhola | Entering the Karakoram Wilderness

Begin walking along the Braldu Valley, surrounded by steep mountains, glacial streams and the rugged landscape of Baltistan.

The route passes through rocky terrain and river valleys as the expedition moves away from the last road-access settlements toward the Baltoro Glacier.

Your guide will set a manageable pace, with breaks for hydration, photographs and rest.

Overnight: Camping at Jhola, approximately 3,100–3,200 m.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner, with expedition tea, coffee, snacks and drinking water.

Day 6

Trek from Jhola to Paiju | Views of the Trango Towers

Continue along the Braldu Valley toward Paiju, an important campsite before the Baltoro Glacier.

As the landscape opens, the remarkable granite towers of the Karakoram begin to dominate the horizon. Depending on visibility, the route offers views toward the Trango Towers and surrounding peaks.

The terrain can be hot, dusty and exposed in sunny weather, so hydration and steady pacing are important.

Overnight: Camping at Paiju, approximately 3,400 m.
Meals: Full expedition catering.

Day 7

Rest and Acclimatization at Paiju

Spend an additional day at Paiju to rest, recover and prepare for the more demanding glacier sections ahead.

Depending on conditions and individual fitness, your guide may arrange a short acclimatization walk. The expedition team also uses this time to organize supplies and prepare for the higher camps.

This is a valuable opportunity to monitor how participants are adjusting to altitude before continuing toward the Baltoro Glacier.

Overnight: Camping at Paiju.
Meals: Full expedition catering.

Day 8

Day 8 – Trek from Paiju to Khoburtse | Onto the Baltoro Glacier

Leave Paiju and approach the Baltoro Glacier, one of the great glaciers of the Karakoram.

The route becomes more demanding as the team crosses rocky moraine, uneven glacier surfaces and sections where footing requires extra care.

The immense granite walls and towers surrounding the glacier provide some of the most memorable scenery of the trek.

Overnight: Camping at Khoburtse, approximately 3,700–3,800 m.
Meals: Full expedition catering.

Day 9

Trek from Khoburtse to Urdukas | Panoramic Glacier Views

Continue across the glacier and its lateral moraine toward Urdukas, one of the most celebrated campsites on the Baltoro route.

Urdukas is known for its extraordinary views across the glacier toward the granite spires and high peaks of the Karakoram.

The walking distance may be shorter than on previous days, but the rocky terrain and increasing altitude still demand a careful pace.

Overnight: Camping at Urdukas, approximately 3,900–4,050 m.
Meals: Full expedition catering.

Day 10

Trek from Urdukas to Goro II | High-Altitude Glacier Camping

The expedition continues deeper into the Baltoro Glacier system, where the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic and the surrounding mountains rise above the ice.

The route crosses extensive glacier terrain, including rocky debris and potentially icy sections. Your guide will choose the safest available line according to current conditions.

At Goro II, the team camps in a remote, high-altitude environment, where nights can be very cold even during the summer trekking season.

Overnight: Camping at Goro II, approximately 4,250–4,350 m.
Meals: Full expedition catering.

Day 11

Trek from Goro II to Concordia | The Heart of the Karakoram

Trek toward Concordia, the remarkable meeting area of the Baltoro and Godwin-Austen glacier systems.

Concordia is famous for its extraordinary concentration of high mountains. In suitable visibility, trekkers can enjoy views of K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum IV and other major Karakoram summits.

Reaching Concordia is one of the great highlights of the K2 Base Camp Trek.

Overnight: Camping at Concordia, approximately 4,500–4,600 m.
Meals: Full expedition catering.

Day 12

Broad Peak Base Camp Excursion or Acclimatization at Concordia

Subject to weather, trail conditions and the group's acclimatization, make an excursion toward Broad Peak Base Camp along the Godwin-Austen Glacier.

This area offers impressive views toward Broad Peak and K2, while providing an opportunity to experience the landscape beyond Concordia before the main K2 Base Camp visit.

If conditions are unsuitable, the guide may instead arrange a shorter acclimatization walk or a rest day at Concordia.

Overnight: Camping at Concordia.
Meals: Full expedition catering.

Day 13

Trek to K2 Base Camp and Return to Concordia | Expedition Highlight

Begin early for the challenging journey toward K2 Base Camp, following the glacier route beyond Concordia and the Broad Peak Base Camp area.

The route leads through rugged glacial terrain toward the foot of K2, the world's second-highest mountain at 8,611 metres.

Weather, glacier conditions and the group's fitness will determine the safest approach. Where conditions permit, the visit may include the Gilkey Memorial, which commemorates climbers who lost their lives on K2.

After spending time in the base camp area, return to Concordia for the night.

This is typically one of the longest and most demanding days of the expedition.

Highest planned point: Approximately 5,150 m.
Overnight: Camping at Concordia.
Meals: Full expedition catering.

Day 14

Return Trek from Concordia to Goro II

Begin the return journey along the Baltoro Glacier.

Although the expedition is now descending, the route still requires concentration on uneven moraine and glacier surfaces. Familiar mountains appear from new angles as the group travels back toward Goro II.

Overnight: Camping at Goro II.
Meals: Full expedition catering.

Day 15

Trek from Goro II to Urdukas

Continue descending along the glacier toward Urdukas.

The route offers further opportunities to appreciate the immense scale of the Baltoro Glacier and the surrounding Karakoram peaks.

As the expedition loses altitude, some participants may notice improved comfort and easier breathing, although the terrain remains demanding.

Overnight: Camping at Urdukas.
Meals: Full expedition catering.

Day 16

Trek from Urdukas to Paiju

Descend from Urdukas, crossing the lower glacier and moraine sections before returning toward Paiju.

This is another physically demanding trekking day, with long sections over uneven ground.

Reaching Paiju marks the return to a lower-altitude campsite and the final major stages of the Baltoro trekking route.

Overnight: Camping at Paiju.
Meals: Full expedition catering.

Day 17

Trek from Paiju to Jhola

Retrace the route through the Braldu Valley toward Jhola.

The terrain gradually changes from the glacier environment to rocky river valleys and the lower Karakoram landscape.

The team maintains a steady pace and continues to monitor weather, trail conditions and group fitness.

Overnight: Camping at Jhola.
Meals: Full expedition catering.

Day 18

Return to Askole and Drive to Skardu, Conditions Permitting

Continue toward Askole or the accessible roadhead, where the expedition's jeep transport is arranged for the return journey to Skardu.

The feasibility of completing both the final walking stage and the drive on the same day depends on the current roadhead, trail conditions, available daylight and the group's progress.

If necessary, the team may adjust the schedule or use available contingency time.

On arrival in Skardu, transfer to the hotel for a well-earned rest.

Overnight: Hotel in Skardu, or camping if the return journey requires an additional stage.
Meals: Expedition meals during the trekking portion; hotel meal arrangements apply after returning to Skardu.

Day 19

Return from Skardu to Islamabad

Transfer to Skardu Airport for the scheduled flight to Islamabad, subject to weather and airline operations.

If the flight cannot operate, the team will arrange suitable road transportation along the Karakoram Highway, subject to road access and safety conditions.

Travelers should be aware that the road journey may require additional time and an overnight stop.

Overnight: Hotel in Islamabad, or accommodation en route if traveling by road.
Meals: Breakfast included during hotel stays; other city meals at personal expense.

Day 20

Islamabad: Weather Contingency and Free Time

This day is reserved primarily as a buffer for possible delays caused by domestic flight cancellations, road closures, trekking conditions or other operational disruptions.

If the journey has proceeded according to schedule, travelers may enjoy free time in Islamabad, rest after the expedition or arrange optional sightseeing.

This contingency day improves itinerary flexibility but cannot eliminate every possible disruption in a remote mountain region.

Overnight: Hotel in Islamabad.
Meals: Breakfast included; lunch and dinner at personal expense.

Day 21

Departure from Islamabad | End of the K2 Base Camp Trek

After breakfast, transfer to Islamabad International Airport according to your international flight schedule.

The 21-day K2 Base Camp Trek concludes with unforgettable memories of the Baltoro Glacier, Concordia, the Karakoram mountains and the journey toward the foot of K2.

Meals: Breakfast included, subject to hotel breakfast hours and departure time.

The itinerary includes travel to Skardu, jeep transportation to the trekking trailhead near Askole, and trekking along the Baltoro Glacier toward Concordia and K2 Base Camp. After visiting the K2 Base Camp area, the group returns along the same general Baltoro Glacier route. This is the classic K2 Base Camp trek and does not include the Gondogoro La crossing. The main K2 Base Camp trekking season is during the summer months, particularly July and August, when conditions are generally more suitable for high-altitude trekking in the Karakoram. We also consider departures during other parts of the trekking season, depending on weather, snow conditions, trail accessibility and operational arrangements. Early- and late-season departures require additional flexibility. Please check our available group departures or contact us for a private trekking expedition. We accept enquiries throughout the year, but trekking departures are seasonal.

No. This 21-day itinerary follows the classic K2 Base Camp trekking route through the Baltoro Glacier and Concordia, returning along the same general approach after visiting the K2 Base Camp area. The Gondogoro La route is a different expedition involving a high mountain pass crossing and additional terrain-related challenges. Travelers specifically interested in crossing Gondogoro La should enquire about our separate K2 Base Camp and Gondogoro La Trek itinerary.
Preparation should include regular hiking, endurance training, walking on uneven terrain and building the ability to trek for several consecutive days while carrying a daypack. K2 Base Camp is approximately 5,150 metres above sea level, so altitude-related illness is a serious consideration. Even physically fit trekkers can develop symptoms. The itinerary allows for gradual progression, but acclimatization varies between individuals. Participants should seek medical advice before traveling, understand the symptoms of altitude sickness and immediately inform their guide if they feel unwell. Story

K2 Base Camp Trek — A Journey Inspired by the Karakoram: There is something unforgettable about approaching K2 on foot. Far from busy roads and cities, the journey follows the immense Baltoro Glacier into a landscape of towering granite peaks, remote mountain camps and extraordinary natural beauty. For many trekkers, reaching Concordia is a defining moment. Surrounded by some of the world's highest mountains, it offers a remarkable sense of the scale and isolation of the Karakoram. The journey toward K2 Base Camp brings travelers closer to the world's second-highest mountain, but the experience is about much more than reaching a single destination. It is about the changing mountain landscapes, the challenges of trekking at altitude, the friendships formed along the way and the people whose knowledge and hard work make these journeys possible. My Connection to the Karakoram My love for these mountains began with my father, who worked as a porter. Growing up, I listened to his stories of mountain adventures, beautiful landscapes, difficult river crossings and rescue efforts in challenging conditions. Those stories inspired my curiosity about the Karakoram and the life of the people who worked there. In 2006, I followed in his footsteps and joined my first trek as a porter. It was an opportunity to discover the mountains I had heard so much about while earning money to support my further studies. Over time, I gained experience as an assistant and became a professional trekking guide in 2012. What began as a way to fund my education developed into a lifelong connection with the mountains. I founded World Adventure Tours in Pakistan in 2018 and established Alpine Trekkers UAE in 2021. Today, our K2 Base Camp trekking expeditions give me the opportunity to share the landscapes, local knowledge and mountain experiences that shaped my journey. For me, the Karakoram has never been just a destination. It is where my father's stories became my own. Siddiq Fegum Founder, World Adventure Tours Pakistan and Alpine Trekkers UAE

The Classic K2 Base Camp Route: Our 21-day journey follows the Baltoro Glacier to Concordia and K2 Base Camp, returning along the same general route. It does not require crossing the technical Gondogoro La pass. Local Knowledge and Support: Our Pakistan-based team brings practical experience of trekking logistics, mountain conditions, local communities, and the challenges of remote travel. Comprehensive Trekking Arrangements: The US$2,790 group package includes scheduled Islamabad–Skardu return domestic flights, airport transfers, jeep transport, trekking support, and the meals and accommodation specified in the itinerary. Authentic Karakoram Experience: Walk among some of the world's most dramatic mountain landscapes, experience Balti hospitality, and travel with a team connected to the region. Safety-Conscious Planning: Our itinerary allows time for acclimatization and operational contingencies.
