1. Stairway to Heaven Right Bank, Ras Al Khaimah

Stairway to Heaven Right Bank is one of the most challenging mountain hikes in Ras Al Khaimah. The route starts in the Wadi Ghalilah area and initially follows the same approach as the historic Left Bank route before the trails separate. The Right Bank continues on the UAE side, climbing through rugged mountain terrain, old village paths and farmhouses toward the upper farmhouse area commonly known as the Right Bank summit.

Our standard Right Bank route is approximately 14 km return with around 1,200 m of elevation gain. The sustained climb, rocky terrain and long descent make it better suited to hikers with good fitness and previous mountain-hiking experience.

Distance: Approx. 14 km return
Elevation Gain: Approx. 1,200 m
Duration: Approx. 6–8 hours
Difficulty: Intermediate+
Route: Out and back
Terrain: Steep mountain trail, rocky ground, loose sections, old village paths and sustained ascent/descent

The historic Left Bank was the original Stairway to Heaven route. That route continues toward the Oman side and is not currently an option Alpine Trekkers operates. Hikers should not follow older GPS tracks into restricted border areas.

Access to Trailhead: Regular cars can reach the Wadi Ghalilah Dam parking area. A 4×4 can normally continue farther along the rough approach toward the hiking start point, depending on current road conditions. Starting from the dam adds additional walking distance to the hike.

2. Wadi Naqab Red Wall Hike, Ras Al Khaimah

Wadi Naqab in Ras Al Khaimah is a dramatic mountain valley with rugged limestone walls, boulder sections and several possible hiking routes. The Red Wall is an early landmark along the valley, where sections of the surrounding rock take on distinctive reddish tones. Our usual route continues beyond the Red Wall and follows the trail toward the balcony section, while stronger intermediate groups can continue farther toward Sanet Village.

The exact distance can vary depending on the route and trailhead access. After heavy rain or flooding, the approach road can be damaged, which may require hikers to start farther from the usual trailhead and complete a shorter route.

Distance: Approx. 8–14 km, depending on route and access
Elevation Gain: Approx. 150–600+ m, depending on route
Duration: Approx. 4–7 hours
Difficulty: Beginner+ to Intermediate
Terrain: Wadi walking, rocky ground, boulders, scrambling and exposed mountain paths on extended routes

Access to Trailhead: A 4×4 is recommended for reaching the usual Wadi Naqab trailhead. The access track is rough and can be affected by heavy rain or flooding, so current road conditions should be checked before travelling.

3. Leopard Canyon (Wadi Al Nimr), Ras Al Khaimah

Leopard Canyon, also known as Wadi Al Nimr, is one of the more adventurous hikes in Ras Al Khaimah. Our full loop passes through the canyon and Hanging Gardens, with boulder scrambling and rocky sections before climbing onto the plateau and continuing toward the old mountain village. The route then descends back toward the wadi to complete the loop.

Distance: Approx. 8–12 km loop
Elevation Gain: Approx. 500–700 m
Duration: Approx. 5–7 hours
Difficulty: Intermediate
Terrain: Rocky wadi, large boulders, scrambling, steep mountain paths and plateau trails

Access to Trailhead: A 4×4 is recommended for reaching the usual Leopard Canyon trailhead. The final approach is rough, and road conditions can change after heavy rain, so check current access conditions before travelling.

4. Wadi Dahir & Sulphur Pools, Dibba, Fujairah

Wadi Dahir in Dibba, Fujairah combines mountain hiking with a descent into a rugged wadi known for its pools. Our loop starts near the local houses and farms, climbs through the surrounding mountain terrain, then descends into the wadi before looping back. The changing terrain makes it an enjoyable step up from an easy beginner walk without requiring a long day in the mountains.

The pools are normally present year-round, although water levels can be higher after rainfall in the surrounding mountains. Conditions can vary, so the appearance and depth of the pools may be different from one visit to another.

Distance: Approx. 8 km loop
Elevation Gain: Approx. 250 m
Duration: Approx. 3–4 hours
Difficulty: Beginner+ to Moderate
Terrain: Mountain paths, rocky wadi, uneven ground and pool sections

Access to Trailhead: The usual Wadi Dahir trailhead in Dibba, Fujairah can be reached by a regular car under normal road conditions. As with mountain and wadi routes, access conditions can change after heavy rain, so check current conditions before travelling.

5. Hidden Oasis Hike, Ras Al Khaimah

Hidden Oasis is a mountain hike in Ras Al Khaimah with a challenging initial climb followed by a more gradual route through the wadi. The toughest part comes early in the hike, as the trail climbs from the parking area toward the balcony section. After the balcony, the route becomes less steep and follows the wadi and an old donkey trail toward Hidden Oasis.

Closer to the oasis, the route passes through a rocky boulder section where careful navigation is sometimes required. Parts of the trail have been improved and made clearer, but on our most recent hike on 19 September 2026, we found that some sections were not fully marked and a few parts of the path were difficult to follow. Hikers unfamiliar with the route should go with someone who knows the trail or has suitable navigation experience.

Night hiking: We do not recommend attempting this route at night if you are unfamiliar with the trail. Reduced visibility can make the less-defined sections and route-finding through the rocky terrain more difficult.

Longer route options: For fit and experienced hikers, Hidden Oasis can also be incorporated into longer Wadi Shah and Jebel Jais mountain routes. These variations involve considerably more distance, elevation gain and route-finding than the standard Hidden Oasis hike and are better suited to experienced mountain hikers.

Distance: Approx. 7 km return
Elevation Gain: Approx. 350 m
Duration: Approx. 3–4 hours
Difficulty: Moderate
Terrain: Steep initial climb, balcony trail, rocky wadi, old donkey trail and boulder sections

Access to Trailhead: The usual Hidden Oasis starting point in Ras Al Khaimah can normally be reached by a regular car, and a 4×4 is not usually required. Road and parking conditions can change after heavy rain, so check current access conditions before travelling.

6. Jebel Yabnah, Ras Al Khaimah

Jebel Yabnah is a challenging mountain hike in Ras Al Khaimah with different route options depending on the group’s experience and objectives. Our standard route explores the base of Jebel Yabnah, old mountain villages and farmhouses before returning, covering approximately 14 km with around 1,200 m of elevation gain.

For stronger hikers, the route can be extended to Jebel Yabnah’s higher peak. This option involves a demanding ascent over loose rock and boulders, followed by a return through less-defined and unmarked mountain trails. The full route is approximately 17 km with around 1,500 m of elevation gain and requires stronger fitness, mountain experience and careful route-finding.

We can also approach the mountain from the opposite direction, starting from the Bear Grylls Explorers Camp area and finishing near the road at our usual starting point.

Standard Route: Approx. 14 km
Elevation Gain: Approx. 1,200 m
Difficulty: Intermediate+
Highlights: Mountain villages, old farmhouses and rugged mountain terrain

Summit Route: Approx. 17 km
Elevation Gain: Approx. 1,500 m
Difficulty: Advanced
Terrain: Steep ascent, loose rock, boulders and less-defined/unmarked mountain trails

Access to Trailhead: The usual Jebel Yabnah starting point can be reached by a regular car under normal road conditions, and a 4×4 is not normally required. The hike can also be approached in the reverse direction from the Bear Grylls Explorers Camp area.

Wadi Daftah is a rugged Hajar Mountains hiking area close to the Sharjah–Khor Fakkan mountain corridor. The area offers several possible hiking routes through rocky wadis, mountain slopes and dry-waterfall sections, with views across the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Some routes through Wadi Daftah include scrambling and short fixed-cable sections around dry waterfalls, making the hike more adventurous than a straightforward wadi walk. The exact distance and difficulty depend on the route selected, so hikers should choose an option appropriate for their fitness and experience.

Distance: Varies depending on route
Elevation Gain: Varies depending on route
Duration: Approx. 3–5 hours, depending on route
Difficulty: Moderate
Terrain: Rocky wadi, mountain trails, boulders, scrambling and dry-waterfall sections

Access to Trailhead: Access depends on the chosen starting point and current road conditions. Check the approach before travelling, particularly after heavy rain when mountain and wadi access can change.

Wadi Kub is a scenic Hajar Mountains hiking area near the Fujairah–Ras Al Khaimah border, with several possible hiking routes and loop variations. Alpine Trekkers follows a shorter approximately 5 km loop that combines wadi walking, colorful rock formations, seasonal water areas and some light climbing and bouldering.

The route starts relatively gently before moving into rockier terrain, giving hikers a taste of the varied landscape Wadi Kub is known for without completing one of the longer mountain loops. With approximately 200 m of elevation gain and around three hours on the trail, our route is suitable for beginners with reasonable fitness who are comfortable walking on uneven and rocky terrain.

The main hiking season in the UAE generally runs from October to April, when temperatures are cooler and conditions are more suitable for mountain hiking. Start times should still be planned according to the weather, route difficulty and expected duration. During warmer periods, exposed mountain routes can become extremely hot, so always check current conditions before setting out.

Essential Hiking Gear & Safety Tips for UAE Trails

  • Water: Carry enough water for the route, weather and expected duration, with additional water for longer or hotter hikes.
  • Wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots, suitable clothing, sun protection and a hat.
  • Carry a charged phone, offline map/navigation, basic first-aid supplies and a headlamp on longer or remote routes.
  • Check the weather before hiking, especially for rain and flash-flood risk in wadis.
  • Avoid unfamiliar or poorly marked mountain routes alone. For technical, remote or unmarked trails, go with someone who knows the route or an experienced guide.
