Nangma Valley Trek Pakistan – The Yosemite of Pakistan

Hidden deep in the Karakoram Mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan, the Nangma Valley Trek is one of Pakistan’s most spectacular short treks. Starting from Kanday Village in the Hushe region of Ghanche District, the trail leads into a dramatic alpine valley surrounded by enormous granite walls, rock towers, green pastures, glacial streams and some of the Karakoram’s most impressive climbing terrain.

Often described as the “Yosemite of Pakistan,” Nangma Valley has a landscape unlike most trekking routes in Pakistan. Instead of walking for days across glaciers, trekkers reach a spectacular granite amphitheatre in just a few days, making this an excellent choice for anyone looking for a genuine high-altitude Karakoram trekking experience without committing to a long K2 Base Camp expedition.

The valley is best known for Amin Brakk, a spectacular granite monolith rising to around 5,850 metres, together with Nangma Tower, Great Tower, Kanday Brakk and other dramatic rock walls. These peaks attract experienced climbers from around the world, while the valley floor remains accessible to trekkers who simply want to experience the scenery.

Why Trek Nangma Valley?

The appeal of the Nangma Valley Trek is simple: big Karakoram scenery without a long expedition.

You start among traditional Balti villages and terraced fields, then gradually leave civilization behind as the trail follows the valley stream towards green alpine meadows and towering granite walls.

Along the way you can expect:

  • Dramatic Karakoram granite towers
  • Views of Amin Brakk and Nangma Tower
  • Green alpine meadows and summer pastures
  • Glacial streams and mountain waterfalls
  • Traditional Balti villages and culture
  • Quiet campsites away from the crowds
  • Incredible opportunities for mountain photography
  • Clear night skies and spectacular stars
  • A chance to experience one of Pakistan’s lesser-known trekking destinations

Unlike the crowded and much longer routes to K2 Base Camp, Nangma Valley offers a more intimate mountain experience. It is particularly attractive for trekkers who want to explore the Karakoram Range while still having enough time to enjoy the valley rather than simply passing through it.

Nangma Valley Trek Itinerary

Our itinerary is designed to combine acclimatization, comfortable trekking, local culture and enough time to enjoy Nangma Valley rather than rushing through the route.

Day 1 – Islamabad/Lahore to Skardu

Activity: Scenic flight to Skardu

Your Nangma Valley adventure begins with a flight from Islamabad to Skardu, weather permitting. The flight takes roughly an hour and offers spectacular views of the mountains as you enter the heart of the Karakoram.

Once in Skardu, transfer to your hotel and take the rest of the day to relax.

This is also a good opportunity to visit Skardu Bazaar and arrange any last-minute trekking requirements.

Altitude: Approximately 2,230–2,400 m

Accommodation: Hotel in Skardu

The Islamabad–Skardu flight is weather dependent, so we always recommend keeping some flexibility in the itinerary.

Day 2 – Skardu to Khaplu

Driving: Approximately 3–4 hours

After breakfast, we leave Skardu and follow the scenic route towards Khaplu, travelling through the valleys of the Indus and Shyok rivers.

Khaplu is one of Baltistan’s most culturally interesting towns and was historically the capital of the former Khaplu kingdom.

After checking in, you can explore the local area and, depending on the schedule, visit the historic Khaplu Palace and nearby cultural sites.

Altitude: Approximately 2,500 m

Accommodation: Hotel/guesthouse in Khaplu

Khaplu is also an excellent place to slow down before heading higher into the mountains.

Day 3 – Khaplu to Kanday Village & Trek to Mingulo Broq

Drive: Approximately 2 hours

Trek: Approximately 3–4 hours

Altitude: Around 3,500 m

After breakfast, we drive from Khaplu towards Kanday Village, the trailhead for the Nangma Valley Trek.

Kanday is a traditional Balti mountain village and the last major settlement before entering the valley.

Here we meet our local trekking team and porters before starting the trek.

The trail gradually climbs through green pastures and narrow sections of the valley. Along the way, we cross wooden bridges and small streams while the first dramatic granite walls begin appearing above us.

After several hours of trekking, we reach Mingulo Broq, a beautiful alpine pasture surrounded by mountains.

This is where the landscape really starts to feel like the Karakoram.

Overnight: Camping at Mingulo Broq

Day 4 – Mingulo Broq to Nangma Valley Base Camp

Trek: Approximately 3–4 hours

Altitude: Around 3,900–4,000 m

We continue deeper into Nangma Valley.

The trail follows the valley upstream through alpine meadows, rocky sections and glacial streams. As we gain altitude, the enormous granite walls become increasingly impressive.

Eventually, the valley opens into a spectacular natural basin surrounded by towering rock formations.

This is Nangma Valley Base Camp.

Settle into camp, enjoy a warm meal and take some time to explore the surrounding area.

If the weather is clear, the evening is perfect for photography and enjoying the incredible mountain scenery.

Overnight: Nangma Valley Base Camp

The standard Nangma Valley base-camp area is generally reported at around 3,900–4,000 m.

Day 5 – Nangma Valley Exploration & Amin Brakk Base Camp

Activity: Exploration/day hike

Altitude: Higher than the main Nangma camp, depending on the route

Today is about experiencing the valley rather than simply covering distance.

After breakfast, we set out with a light daypack to explore the upper Nangma Valley and, conditions permitting, move towards Amin Brakk Base Camp.

Amin Brakk is one of the most spectacular granite formations in the region and is famous among the international climbing community.

You do not need to be a climber to appreciate it. Standing beneath these enormous walls gives you a real sense of the scale and power of the Karakoram.

The exact high point of the day depends on weather, trail conditions and the group's acclimatization.

Overnight: Nangma Valley Base Camp

Day 6 – Nangma Valley to Kanday & Return to Skardu

Trek: Approximately 5–6 hours

Drive: Approximately 4–6 hours

After breakfast, we begin our descent back through Nangma Valley.

Walking downhill gives you a completely different perspective of the landscape, with the granite towers rising dramatically above the valley.

We retrace our route to Kanday Village, where our 4x4 vehicles will be waiting.

From Kanday, we begin the drive back towards Skardu through the spectacular mountain valleys.

After several days in the mountains, a hot shower and a comfortable hotel room in Skardu will feel well deserved.

Overnight: Hotel in Skardu

Return times can vary depending on road and weather conditions. Similar commercial itineraries allow roughly 4–6 hours for the trek back to Kanday and several hours for the drive to Skardu. (Destination Pakistan)

Nangma Valley Trek Difficulty

The Nangma Valley Trek is generally considered moderate.

You do not need technical mountaineering or rock-climbing experience for the standard trek. However, this is still a high-altitude trek in the Karakoram, and good physical fitness is important.

Expect:

  • 3–6 hours of trekking on most days
  • Rocky and uneven mountain trails
  • Steep sections
  • Stream crossings
  • Altitudes approaching 4,000 m
  • Cold nights at high camps
  • Possible changes in weather
  • Optional higher excursions towards Amin Brakk Base Camp

The biggest challenge is usually altitude rather than technical terrain. A sensible pace, good acclimatization, hydration and listening to your guide are important.

Recent 2026 trekking guides similarly classify Nangma as moderate and emphasize altitude as the primary consideration. (Alpas Travels)

Best Time for Nangma Valley Trek

The main trekking season for Nangma Valley is June to September.

June

The valley begins to open as the winter snow retreats. The landscape becomes increasingly green, although weather and snow conditions can still be variable.

July & August

These are generally the most popular months, with greener meadows, better access to the upper valley and relatively favorable trekking conditions.

September

A quieter time to visit, with fewer trekkers and beautiful autumn conditions developing later in the month. Weather can become less predictable as the season progresses.

For the best overall combination of accessibility, mountain scenery and trekking conditions, July and August are generally the safest choices, while June and September can offer a quieter experience with a little more weather uncertainty.

Permits, Visa & Local Trekking Arrangements

Nangma Valley is a trekking destination in the wider Karakoram and Ghanche/Hushe region, and requirements can depend on the exact route, current regulations and whether the itinerary enters a designated protected/core zone.

For that reason, we recommend not treating Nangma as a completely permit-free trek.

For international visitors, the appropriate Pakistan visa and trekking documentation should be arranged before travel. Pakistan's official tourism information directs trekkers towards the relevant trekking/mountaineering visa process and designated tour operators, while current government fee documentation also lists trekking/environment-related fees for open and restricted zones. (Pakistan Tourism)

Alpine Trekkers handles the applicable trekking paperwork, local coordination and logistics for our guests, so you can focus on preparing for the mountains.

Where the route falls within protected areas, visitors are expected to follow designated trails and environmental rules. The Central Karakoram National Park specifically emphasizes staying on designated trails and minimizing environmental impact. (Central Karakoram National Park)
